WRATH AS GOD PRESSING THE TRUTH ON US
I concluded the last chapter by saying that Godâs displays of justice, mercy, patience, discipline, and so forth are demonstrations of love, in differing contexts. At certain times for certain people, Godâs patience may be the best means of encouraging them to turn to him. In other situations, Godâs discipline may be the best means. Can Godâs wrath sometimes be the best means? My conclusion is that the answer is yes. But in showing why this is the case, we first need a clearer understanding of what exactly it means for God to act in wrath.
I noted in chapter one that Godâs wrath involves a pattern of action designed at some purposeful goal. We have since seen that this goal must (somehow) be a benevolent one, aimed at peopleâs long-term well-being. But this pattern of actionâlike all patterns of actionâwill have a certain shape to it. That is, there will be certain features of this pattern that can help us better to understand it. When God acts in wrath, there will be a certain experience humans have as they encounter it. I want to explore these points in this chapter, concluding with a final description of what it means for God to act in wrath.
