Chapter 9

“Stop following us.” Zavix scowled over his shoulder.

For once, it wasn’t me he was grouching at.

After we’d left the hot pools, Kitty Mc Lightning Paws had made the questionable decision to stick with us. He’d followed our group as we wound through the colourful bushes in search of food. Kerax had collected us a bounty of nuts, berries, and mushrooms, despite Zavix grumbling the whole time about how much easier it would be to catch us a stag or other game.

A soft-furred head butted my hand. Kit stared up at me, innocently blinking wide violet eyes. Neon pink stripes, like bolts of lightning, arced over his sleek black frame. I stroked between his ears, enjoying the silkiness of his fur.

“Don’t listen to him, Kit. Sparky’s just jealous that you’re cuter than him.” I poked my tongue out at Zavix, watching his scowl deepen until his crimson brows almost met in the middle.

Pascan flashed me a smirk, his sharply handsome face threatening to steal my breath. “You’re going to give both my brothers a complex at that.”

The tall fae led us towards the ruins, somehow navigating through the thick brush with ease. Kerax had taken off his top, using it to hold the food he’d gathered, and I tried not to stare at both of the twins’ lean muscle on show. Zavix had scars, carefully hidden beneath intricate silver ink, while Kerax was all smooth red skin. Both were just as beautiful, and I fought not to fan myself as I watched them stalk through the jungle like the predators they were.

A mass of blue liana vines came into view, smothering what little white stone remained of the once proud buildings.

Pascan grabbed a few logs, swiping them off the forest floor before disappearing through the curtain of vines into our shelter.

I blew out a breath. Still no sign of Finn.

Worry churned my gut as I wondered where he was and whether my sweet minotaur was still in one piece. My thoughts jumped back to Vrix and his wolves. Were they ok too, or had those sabretooth beasts hurt them? At some point, I’d accepted that I wouldn’t be escaping the Hunt all that easily. I hated to admit it, but the smart move was probably to wait it out in the safe embrace of these handsome fae instead of getting hunted down by some of the shadier fae lurking in the woods.

Stuffing my worries back down, their weight settled into my gut like a boulder.

I followed Pascan, ducking through the hanging vines. The stone room hadn’t changed, smooth rock walls ending abruptly to a clear image of the midnight sky above.

Pascan stacked the logs in a small pile in the heart of the space, setting a ring of loose stones around it. He held a huge red hand over the wood. A whoosh sounded, followed by a comforting crackle as heat burst through the room, taking it from cold and creepy to warm and inviting.

The royal fae stood back, admiring the flames he’d magicked into being.
