CHAPTER TWENTY

Concentrating on the last class of the day is impossible, especially knowing this was the last class I was in last week when I leapt over the table and attacked Tasha like a crazed animal. I don’t even pay her any notice through the class because all I can think about is Muz and Rhys. Tillie and Dale still sit with me but are quieter than normal, and I get the feeling Rhys may have told them what happened. Maybe they won’t want to be my friends anymore, either. After all, I was the outsider that came and interrupted their friendship bubble.

I force myself not to think about Rhys, but then all I can think about is Muz and what it means if he’s getting worse. Is he going to die? I can’t bear to think of that possibility. Muz needs to be okay. He needs to get better. He can’t die because of me. My tummy rolls just thinking about him, so I try to force those thoughts to the back of my mind, along with my thoughts of Rhys.

Even though there’s a security guard stationed outside my classroom, which seems to be the norm with all of my classes so far, Simon has taken it upon himself to stand with the guard, watching in on me through the window of the door instead of going to his own class. I don’t know how he’s getting away with it, but he has somehow convinced the uniformed man that it’s okay for him to be out there with him.

I have to admit, I feel safer knowing Simon is close by. I hadn’t realised how much I depended on all the guys until this moment. One day, when all of this bullshit is over with, I’ll find a way to thank them all.

After school, my pack lingers on the sidelines while I work with Travis to serve our community service. We finish weeding the garden bed and move on to trimming back some of the overgrown bushes. While I trim away at each overgrown stem, Travis hacks away at the bush he’s working on like he’s Edward Scissorhands. Unfortunately, Edward has more skill. That poor bush is going to be nothing but a twig soon.

“You might want to take it easy on that poor bush.” I giggle as Travis flicks his hands around like he’s sculpting something amazing.

“Nah. I’ve got a knack for this shit!” Travis smirks, hacking away.

“Jesus, Trav, put the sheers down and step away from the defenceless bush.”

“No way! I’m a pro!” Travis tips his head back in an evil laugh, and a small smile tugs at my lips as I focus on my task.

“Has something happened?” Travis’s question draws me out of my thoughts, and my brows knit together as I glance at him.

“What?”

“Has something happened? You’re not real talkative today. Besides picking on my tree sculpture, that is.” Travis drops his sheers and leans against the brick wall before slipping the cigarette out that’s tucked behind his ear and pops it in his mouth.
