PARENT INVOLVEMENT

Parent involvement has as many different meanings as there are school districts. Unquestionably, parents are an integral part of children’s schooling through the guidance they exercise at home. Parent involvement is sometimes confused with parent education, but there are specific differences. Although parent education is part of the larger umbrella of parent involvement, I use five general areas to define parent involvement: working with the children in the home, parent-teacher communication, classroom volunteering, fundraising, and policy making. See Figure 8.1.
