One particularly interesting type of AI is so-called ‘deep learning’, in which software is designed to imitate the human brain – more specifically, the large array of neurons found in the neocortex, via an artificial ‘neural network’.³⁰ This design is being combined with “reinforcement learning” technology, which enables the computer to teach itself by learning from its exposure to new data without being explicitly programmed to do so.³¹ Deep learning has made remarkable advances in image and speech recognition, by giving machines the ability to self-learn.
