Chapter Fourteen
Kayla stared at her meager selection of clothing, spread across her bed. If only she’d done laundry last night, like she’d planned.
She glanced toward the hallway, half tempted to do a load of wash right now, but there wasn’t time.
With Noah Williams. Her stomach dipped. She could hardly believe she was going out with Noah Williams, perhaps the best-looking cowboy in all of Texas.
She could hardly believe he’d asked her. Did that mean he found her attractive?
No. His reasons had been purely logical.
Still, she should’ve declined his invitation, based on the way her pulse spiked the moment he asked her. Not to mention her goals as far as the children were concerned. Getting more entangled with the man clearly determined to raise them would only muddle her thoughts, and thus her decisions, further.
With a huff, she plucked her least wrinkled outfit off the bed and put it on. Then, dressed in a rainbow-striped romper that hit just above her knees, she grabbed her brush and faced the mirror.
She was badly in need of a cut and color.
As if on cue, her phone chimed. Trista had forwarded a silly video, asking her to coffee.
Kayla mouthed a thank-you to the ceiling and shot off a response. How about I bring coffee to you, in exchange for a cut and color, with highlights?
Trista texted back: Ha! That must be some coffee! Add in a salon makeover, and you’ve got yourself free hair appointments for a year.
That would be quite a deal, if Kayla were planning to stay that long. Regardless, considering how great a friend Trista was, Kayla agreed. Let me know your next opening, and I’ll be there. She doubted Noah would mind accommodating whatever date Trista suggested. Worst-case scenario, she’d ask one of the ladies from Trinity Faith Church to watch the kids.
Of course, this arrangement did little to help her limp locks today. With a sigh, she grabbed her hair spray, hung her head upside down and spritzed. She stood up straight again and scrutinized her reflection, satisfied with the increased volume. After freshening up her makeup, she still had fifteen or so minutes to spare, so she sat on the edge of her mattress and opened her laptop.
No surprise, the Wi-Fi proved too weak and intermittent for her to log in to her email, so she spent the rest of her time brainstorming solutions to their current design challenges. They had three home redesigns lined up within the next month, two that involved structural changes. One of their clients wanted stained cement in their basement, and another was hoping to add a minibar and theater alcove.
A knock sounded on her door, making her jump.
Noah. A jolt shot through her. Taking in a slow breath to calm her ricocheting emotions, she closed her computer and stood. She took one last glance in the mirror, gave her hair one more fluff, grabbed her purse and answered.
“Hey.” Noah grinned and tipped his hat to her. “You look...” His Adam’s apple dipped. “Nice.
