I made it to the barn right on schedule, giving me plenty of time to ride my two clients’ horses, then transfer over my schedule for the few lessons I had to Missy. It was depressing how easily I cleared my schedule.

“I need new clients,” I muttered into my calendar, while I eyed how few reasons I had to be at work today.

She said nothing, her eyes subtly strayed to the proposal I’d been ignoring for a few weeks.

“I’m thinking about it.”

“You already said yes. The rescue sent over the descriptions of the horses they think would be a good fit.”

I’d seen them. They were a good fit. They were also heartbreaking, and I wanted all of them, not just the few I had room for. Not to mention my prissy little dressage heart was struggling to accept having a trail-riding string in my show barn. Heck, my prissy little dressage heart was struggling to admit that I wasn’t at a big show barn anymore. At least not like what I was used to. Being a big fish in a small pond wasn’t nearly as much fun as being a medium-size fish in a big pond.

“Fine. Pick your favorites. We’ll go look at them next week.”

She beamed but didn’t rub it in. “Go solve that murder!”

I knew she was making fun of me, but I appreciated the encouragement. “Don’t burn my barn down.”

“I won’t. I’m more partial to robbing you blind, anyway.”

“I’m out of here,” I mumbled and left, pushing down the voice that said I should be staying at the barn instead. I was going to save Aunt Helen. That was more important.

By ten, I was heading back to my grandmother’s house, then showered, still debating the idea of a trail-riding business in my head. Missy was right that the barn could really use an influx of steady money, and the resort would benefit, but now that I was facing the reality of it, I was having more doubts. Not to mention how horrible it would be when we went to pick up the rescues and wanted to take all of them home, not just the ones suited to trail life. This was going to be harder than her eighteen-year-old exuberance was leading her to believe. And I still wasn’t comfortable with having it in my barn.

Lindsey confirmed earlier that she’d meet us in Misne, in her own car, which I thought was fair. Gran had been a little mean yesterday. Then again, it was Gran. She was brusque, at best, most days. Somehow it was a part of her charm.

I stopped outside Gran’s house, turning off the truck, and getting out to go knock, knowing a quick text to say I was outside would be met with a long conversation about general politeness and manners. Coming to the door was the only acceptable answer. It was also a waste of gas and battery life, but she didn’t see that as a reason to be rude.

Polite was polite.

“Lark. It’s about time that you got here.
