CHAPTER 14

Diavolo

The anger inside of me had reached a point of no return. As I stormed toward the group of soldiers who’d abandoned me, the look of fear in their eyes was justified. Without hesitation, I issued a backhand across the first man’s face, the force pitching him to the ground. When I turned toward the others, most of them backed away.

“You have defied me. You will be punished. There is no chance at redemption.” I’d debated what I would do to them, but at this point I was far too enraged to make a decent decision. My father would have strung them up, beating them for hours if not days before killing them.

“We were given orders,” one of the soldiers dared to say.

I took long strides toward him, towering over the man by several inches. “I am your leader. There is no other command you should have followed. And you do not follow orders given from a text. Let me see your phone.”

The soldier in front of me didn’t respond, but another jerked out his cellphone, handing it to me. I’d yet to program numbers into my phone, but the order was clear and based on knowledge of where I’d gone earlier, which indicated the order had been trustworthy. I knew better. I shoved it back to the younger man, returning my attention to the asshole standing in front of me.

When a smile crossed his face, I pulled out my weapon, placing the barrel against his forehead. “Is there something else you would like to say to me?”

He paled, looking down, his lack of response the only thing keeping him alive.

“Answer me.”

“No, sir,” he snarled.

“There will be no other warnings. None. If you do not follow my command, the punishment will be immediate, and I will have no mercy.” I shouted my words, the cords in my neck straining.

As Paulo approached, I kept the gun pointed at the soldier’s head.

“What do you want me to do with them?” he asked.

“Remove them from duty. Take their weapons. Make certain word is on the street that they betrayed me. Let the jackals feed off their remains.” He knew exactly what I meant. By releasing them, they would be treated as traitors even amongst smaller cartels. If Rojas wanted them, so be it. I couldn’t care less.

Paulo turned toward them, issuing orders as I walked away. There would be several punishments given, but the men were not to blame. At least not entirely.

I remained where I was, refusing to back down. The lack of respect was getting to the breaking point.

“I’m curious. How did you know the soldiers had been ordered to return?”

“I’d just left additional files on your desk when they returned. The driver of your SUV told me he’d gotten the text. I demanded to see his phone for proof.”

The line of command had been followed in the sense that the soldier in our SUV had been placed in charge of security for my outing. The entire situation had a stench to it.
