At the mention of Joe Sampson’s name, Bob Wilson went cold with fear. Even worse, he’d just lied to the detective. Again. The truth was, he didn’t know the drifter, but he certainly knew who he was. The last time he’d seen him was right outside his house the very afternoon Lorraine had gone missing. He couldn’t be certain what Sampson had overheard, but Bob was sure the man had heard something. Why else had he taken off like that?

The young Barrington boy was persistent; trying so hard to find Lorraine. Too hard. Bob was scared he’d eventually stumble on the truth. The thing was, Bob had never meant to kill her. Things had gotten out of control. He hadn’t meant to cover it up either. He’d panicked. Now he was stuck with living a lie. It was slowly killing him.

He wasn’t cut out for deception. He was a pastor, sworn to uphold God’s truth! Ever since he’d started down this path, he’d felt his soul slowly slipping away until he felt like a hollowed-out shell. For the past eight days, he’d been merely existing, going through the motions in a daze. All along he mourned the loss of his wife, the woman he’d loved for most of his life.

Now he felt an impending sense of doom. Zac Barrington wasn’t the type of man to give up. He’d been just as persistent in achieving his goals when he’d been young. Good at school and excelling on the sporting field, Bob had been proud to watch the boy grow up into a fine young man. He’d been proud at the thought of his only daughter marrying such a man.

But that hadn’t happened and that was fine. Emily had the right to choose her own path, including who she shared her life with. If that man wasn’t Zac, then Bob respected her decision. But that prior knowledge of the young Barrington boy meant that Bob knew it was only a matter of time before Zac stumbled upon the truth. Bob needed to give him a distraction, point the finger away from himself. The realization of what he was about to do filled him with shame, but he had no choice. Someone had to take the fall.

He shifted in his chair and frowned, as if the thought had only just occurred to him.

“Actually, Zac. Now that I think about it, there is something I remember from that day. It was your mention of Joe Sampson that made me think of it. Yes. Joe Sampson. I remember him now. Lorraine spoke to me about him. She really wants to help him.”

He grimaced. “You remember how she is. She’s always seen the good in people. That’s my Lorraine. After she mentioned him, I checked into his background, made a few discreet inquires. He seems to have a long history of drug abuse that often results in violence. He’s done time in jail. That’s why I was a little alarmed when I saw him outside my house the afternoon Lorraine disappeared.
