After a long, tense drive, the deserts of Wanderland sprouted into the gnarled forest of Joshuas surrounding Tulgey Wood. They wove past the spiny, crooked trees to approach the barricaded entry to the Queen’s camp. Upon their arrival, an armed guard swarmed to escort the vans inside. The vehicles slowed to a stop and the doors flung open, surrounding them with the trained weapons of a dozen collared Jokers.

“Everybody out!” Ace barked. He killed the engine and the Jokers surged in, stealing Jack from the back seat. Nate slid from the passenger door and turned to face him, his expression cast in stone.

“Bring the traitor,” he demanded, his jaw tight. “The Queen is waiting.”

A small shudder ran through Jack’s body, but he stepped forward bravely, his head held high as Nate escorted him away, abandoning the others to the hulking Battle Marshal.

“Remove them,” Ace commanded, his eyes glinting maliciously as the remaining Jokers rushed forward to forcibly pull Alice and her team from the van. He prowled over to the prisoners and yanked Alice’s manacles to jerk her towards him. His arm snaked around her neck like a whip, tethering her against his body before growling in her ear.

“You were stupid to come back,” he seethed. “She’s been waiting for you.”

Alice wanted nothing more than to bash his face again, but his hand knotted in her ponytail, forcing her to march defiantly as he paraded her past Tulgey’s gawking residents. The Battle Marshal herded them to the heart of the camp and Alice’s stomach dropped. Chess was right; this was a suicide mission. Now she’d never find Dinah. She schooled her face to hide her desperation, and her teeth clenched so hard her jaw began to ache.

“Fear looks good on you,” Ace growled, pulling her close until his knee buckled. He yelped and stumbled, then pushed Alice away to hurl a meaty fist into Chess’ stomach. Chess hit the ground hard, and Ace landed a heavy kick between his legs for good measure.

“There’s nothing you can do for her now,” he sneered. “And I’m the least of her worries.”

A wave of sympathy rushed through Alice as she was corralled forward by another Joker, leaving Chess gasping in pain. Ace swore and stalked ahead of the group, giving Alice the fleeting satisfaction of watching him limp away on the leg Chess had kicked.

They filed onward and soon approached the Queen’s looming quarters. Furious shouts escaped the solitary structure, followed by a series of muffled cries.

The Queen had an audience.

Alice’s heart kicked wildly, then stalled as the Battle Marshal led them past the blockaded entrance toward a vaulted steel gate at the rear of the camp. Two sets of Jokers manned the opening, armed with heavy artillery rifles and Kevlar body armor. Barbed wired wrapped the surrounding walls and top of the gate, adding to the wall’s already massive height. The hairs on the back of Alice’s neck prickled as they neared and a low, tinny hum buzzed from the barrier’s metal paneling.
