CHAPTER SEVEN

PHOENIX

“Your friend knows I’m not paying him to help out, right?” Mrs. Taylor teases me the next day.

I look over at Griffin, who has been dutifully moving heavy boxes of books and assisting me stock the shelves. Even though he’s a few aisles away, I know he can hear our conversation. Griffin told me more about heightened shifter senses last night when I got settled in at his place.

“He’s not exactly doing it to score points with you,” I joke right back.

Mrs. Taylor laughs and squeezes my shoulder. “Griffin is a good man. He’s helped out a lot of people in this town.”

I smile and nod, knowing that my mate is the best. Mate. It’s strangely… not strange. It’s perfect. Griffin is perfect.

“Thanks. I guess I’ll keep him around for a bit,” I say, my eyes darting to where he’s stacking boxes. Griffin snaps his head up, those dark green eyes narrowed at me playfully, and I know I’m going to be getting a visit from him soon.

“Listen, I’m going to stay here a bit longer and go through the new inventory. You and Griffin should head out a little early.”

“Are you sure?”

“As soon as he’s done with those boxes,” Mrs. Taylor says, raising her voice even though she doesn’t need to. We both laugh when Griffin stacks all five boxes up and lifts them with ease, carrying them to the back where Mrs. Taylor will do inventory. “Thank you!” she calls out as she makes her way back there.

Griffin nods and then races toward me, his eyes glowing. God, he’s so… hot. Feral. Like he can’t wait to get me alone. I can’t wait, either. This entire shift has been pure torture with Griffin so close and yet not being able to touch him. At least, not the way we both want.

“Thinking dirty thoughts, are we?” he asks a second later, backing me into the bookshelf and nuzzling into the side of my neck.

“How did you know?” I ask breathlessly.

“I can fucking smell how much you want me. Does it hurt?”

My heart thrashes around in my chest at his words. He’s so in control, so dominant, but in a way that makes me feel sexy and powerful, too.

“Yes,” I admit. “I ache for you.”

“That’s the mating moon, little flame. I’ve felt it all damn day. I can take the pain away. I’ll always give my mate everything she needs.”

I nod, gasping softly when Griffin presses a trail of kisses up my neck, stopping just beneath my ear.

“Ready to go home?” he murmurs, taking a step back and holding his hand out for me. I take it, letting him lead me outside. “I have another date night planned for us,” he tells me as we start walking back to his cabin on the outskirts of the small downtown district.

“Hmm?” I ask after a moment passes. I know he said something, but I’m finding it really hard to concentrate on anything except the knot of lust and raw emotion throbbing from the inside out.
