Panel 1: Brighton played a large part in the first world war not only providing soldiers for the front but also as Dr Brighton. It provided hospitals for the wounded soldiers to recuperate in “healthy Sussex by sea” before being discharged to fight or (if they were too injured to return to the front) back into civilian life. Although the Pavilion initially was used as a hospital to treat the injured Indian soldiers after they were redeployed from Europe into the Middle East the need for such a facility diminished and the hospital closed in January of 1916.

For many years the Old Ship was the main terminal for London to Brighton stagecoaches, and with the advent of the first automobiles became the headquarters of the Automobile Club in 1906 (later to become the Royal Automobile Association). With this connection, a garage was built in 1928 in the original stables. Because of space limitations this was arranged on three floors, which were accessed by a car lift. A 20-bedroom annex was provided for chauffeurs. The Pavilion in Brighton reopened in April of 1916 as a hospital for British amputees, concentrating on soldiers who had lost arms and legs and treated over 6000 casualties of war. Prosthetic limbs were fitted and injuries treated. However, the ultimate aim of the hospital was rehabilitation and vital skills were taught so that the men could return to their old lives as much as possible after the war and re-join their local communities.

Young girls also had a vital role to play in the First World War and that was in caring for the sick and supporting the Surgeons and the Doctors in the role of Nurse. Ideally, girls had to come from a good family, be well educated and be unmarried and of good character. The work was hard and the hours long. However, it was seen to be patriotic as well an ideal place perhaps to meet an eligible Doctor or wounded soldier to become her future husband.
