Chapter Eighteen

Tommy watched as Amato and two other men went into the computer room with the cart loaded with stuff. Chip mentioned something about them using the closet in the panic room for their use, but he didn’t catch all of it.

After a while, Amato came back out with some bags. “Hey, I’m going to take this up to my room, I’ll be back in a few minutes.”

“Tommy,” Don Ferrone called out his name, “are you okay with Amato guarding you? Should I have someone else here?”

Tommy turned to look at Don Ferrone, frowning at him. “Amato has been nothing but good to me, even when I’m bitchy. I have to admit, he’s not bad to have around.”

Don Ferrone smiled at him. “I’m guessing you’re enjoying the eye candy?”

He tried hard not to blush, but he could feel some heat creeping up into his face. “He’s a good-looking man.”

“Yes, he is, and he’s also a good one too.” Don Ferrone leaned back in the chair he was occupying. “I’ve known Amato since we were kids, grew up together, and I can honestly tell you that there’s no better man to have protecting you. I’ve had him looking after others before, and I’ve seen him get hurt for them, but he’s always made sure that who he protected was safe. Period.”

“But who protected him?”

“Ah, now you see my problem. Amato is still bleeding from the loss of Leone, but he’s ready to move on. I can see that the wound left by the death of Leone is closing, but Amato is the type of man who needs someone in his life, someone to care for, to love. He’s always been like that. I think you might be the one for him.”

“I thought you gave him this job as a punishment?”

“He was killing himself, he needed to have a focus. He might have thought this was a ‘punishment’, but it was more of an ‘intervention’.”

“How did you know about us?”

“I didn’t, but my friend needed someone to look after, so I thought that giving him this assignment, the job of looking after a hurt and what I thought defenseless hacker would be the perfect way to get him out of the black hole he’d fallen into.”

Tommy thought about what he’d said and could see his point. Amato did seem to be getting his feet under him and was becoming more focused.

“How long do you think we’re going to need the bodyguards?” Tommy quietly asked, looking around at his family.

When Don Ferrone let out a sigh, Tommy knew he was about to step into a large pile of shit.

“Honestly, I think it’s going to be for a while. We thought, the other dons and I, that we’d kept the Mexican Cartels out, for the most part, but it looks like we were wrong. I’m not sure how, or when, but it looks like they’ve somehow got in when we weren’t looking. Either that or someone helped them, and if someone did, then I pity the fool because they’re dead men walking.
