Chapter twenty

Aubrey

Holy shit.

Holy fucking shit.

I had sex with my best friend.

Hot, amazing sex.

Probably the best I’ve ever had.

“Have I died and gone to heaven?”

Brody chuckles next to me. “No, you’re not in heaven. This is real life, beautiful.”

My face heats as the realization of what we did washes over me. Suddenly self-conscious, I roll away from him and move up the bed pulling the covers over myself.

“Aubrey?” Brody says, standing up, a questioning look in his eyes. He watches me for a few beats before gesturing toward the condom. “I’m going to go take care of this, and then we’ll talk.”

We’ll talk.

Great.

Famous last words.

He’s already regretting what we did. I got lost in the moment. In the fairy tale. In seeing that tattoo on his hip and discovering he remembers that night as vividly as I do. In his confession of what he wished for. I take a deep breath, trying to stop my spiraling. The bed dips as Brody climbs in next to me.

“What’s going on?” he asks, reaching for me. But I shake my head, wrapping my arms around myself, careful to keep the sheet over my body.

“Aubrey. Talk to me. Please.”

“You tell me.” I take a deep breath before continuing. “You said you wanted to talk.”

“I wanted to know why you pulled away from me. What happened?” His gaze darts around my face.

“I thought you were having second thoughts.”

“Never, Aubs. Never.” This time when he reaches for me, I let him pull me into his arms and bury my head in his chest, inhaling deeply.

“Why have we waited so long to do that?” he asks after several moments of silence. “I was such a fool to not tell you how I felt sooner. I’m sorry, Aubrey.”

“Why are you sorry?” I ask, pulling back so I can look him in the eyes. His gaze darts back and forth, and he swallows a few times before speaking.

“Because I’ve been missing out on you all these years. On this. On us.”

“Brody, you know it would never have worked out. We live over a hundred miles apart. We both have demanding jobs.” I take a deep breath. “Yes, the sex was amazing. The best I’ve ever had. But I’m moving, and we’ll be thousands of miles apart. We should enjoy this week together.”

“My contract is up with the Storm. I have nothing tying me to Florida anymore. What happens if we weren’t going to be thousands of miles apart?”

I open and close my mouth a few times before finally saying, “There are no hockey teams in Hawaii, Brody. Besides I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before the Storm call with a new contract.” Why is this so hard? My heart wants one thing—Brody—but my brain wants another thing—this job in Hawaii.

Everything in me is at war.

He runs a hand down his face blowing out a breath before saying, “I don’t think they will. I’ll be an Unrestricted Free Agent on the first. That’s only a few weeks away. They would’ve called by now.
