I didn’t know a word for how I was feeling.

Everything had wrung me out.

Between the embarrassment of buying the wrong cane this morning, up through the repercussions it had had, and knowing what was coming—it was too much to think about, and so I didn’t want to think at all. I just leaned over the bay’s neck again, urging it to go faster still.

And I believed him when he said he’d kill more battleships of soldiers for me, as stomach churning as the thought was.

I wished I could go back in time and wrest my foolish letter away from my foolish hands and thus stop myself from ever revealing who had trapped me. I had been operating under my old beliefs, that whatever my father wanted was the right thing to do.

But my father would’ve never granted me this moment, and my mother would’ve been aghast, were she still alive.

No, I would’ve never gotten even so much as a solo ride. In pants, no less.

With newly pierced ears.

I gave my horse’s neck a secret smile. My life was mine, and I was racing toward a future I was desperate to attain.
