SYDNEY COULDN’T REMEMBER the last time a man’s laughter warmed her so thoroughly. Adam had always been an adventurous and carefree lover, but she still sensed a difference in him. A good one. He’d always laughed with her, teased her, quipped back with equal wit to whatever barb she’d thrown his way. But in contrast to the past, she knew now that the humor truly reached his heart, perhaps even his soul.

As he tossed her soiled T-shirt into the trunk with the sopping wet blanket, then pulled his T-shirt over her head like a parent dressing a child, she realized she didn’t much care about the old Adam anymore. So the new Adam didn’t remember her or making love in the rain that night on the golf course last year. So what? They had a new memory—a memory that existed for both of them.

He shrugged into his jeans as best as a wet man could. “I’ll drive.”

She smiled and slid into the passenger seat. “Do you know the way back?” After buckling her seat belt, she snuggled sideways onto the seat, her legs tucked beneath her. She closed her eyes, and felt a small but incredibly satisfied smile on her lips.

“Funny how the road leading to your bedroom seems clear as a bell.”

She hummed, lulled by the revving engine and Adam’s nearness into a twilight sleep. Exhausted, she needed a catnap to revitalize her body. Clear her mind.

They had a long night ahead of them and Sydney wanted to savor every single second.
