âSo, your next appointment is Thursday,â Lana said. âIâll see you then.â
Evan waited until he heard the click of the phone hanging up before he entered her office. âMum, can we have a quick chat?â
âOf course.â Lana slid a folder into a filing cabinet. âWhatâs up?â Her eyes searched for contact.
He took the seat opposite her desk. âNothing. Itâs just⦠you know my tripâs getting closer.â He panned the room without motive, fixing on the fiddle-leaf fig tree in the corner. Its oversized leaves were motionless against the white wall. âThereâs a few extra bits of equipment Iâm going to need. For my camera.â
Lana observed her sonâs eyes cautiously. âYou want me to increase your credit limit again, donât you?â
Evan took a moment before he spoke. âJust a little. This equipment will really make a difference to the photos I take.â
Lana rolled her head back and clasped the back of her neck. âEvan, Iâve already given you a considerable amount for your trip. So has your grandmother. Have you even booked your flights yet? Or your accommodation?â
âIâll be doing that soon.â
âWith what money? We helped you build up a travel fund that was meant to help you with your flights and accommodation. You told us you were going to get a job and save up for your spending money and any extra equipment you need. What happened to that idea?â
Evan shifted his eyes to the floor. âIâve tried finding a job. Thereâs nothing in this town.â
âThere are plenty of jobs going. I saw one just yesterday in the new Countdown.â Lana shut her laptop with a slap.
Evanâs eye roll was obvious.
âWhat, you think itâs beneath you?â Lana was growing visibly frustrated.
âNo, of course not. Bill said I might be able to start working with him and his dad anyway.â
âOn the cars?â
âYeah.â
Lana furrowed her eyebrows. âDo you think thatâs something you would enjoy?â
Evan gave a moody shrug. âI dunno. More than sitting on a stupid checkout.â
âEvan! I didnât bring you up to be like that.â
âLike what?â
âEntitled. Ungrateful.â She softened her tone slightly and placed her hand on his. âLook, Ev. Weâre very blessed to have what we have. But you canât take anything for granted. We still need to work hard. Thatâs what I did. Even though I had you at a young age, which is the greatest thing to ever happen to me, I still worked hard to get where I am now. I stayed up all hours studyingââ
âStudying your psychology degree, I know. This isnât the first time youâve told me.â
Lanaâs eyes grew slender. Evan could tell heâd touched a nerve. Pushed too far. âWhatâs got into you? I feel like I donât know who you are right now.â
âForget it. I should never have asked.â Evan stood up. âIâll speak to Grandma instead.â
Lana took to her feet. âNo you will not. Sheâs given you enough, as have I. This is because of those boys youâre hanging around with, isnât it? Theyâve influenced you. Spending all your money, no doubt. You must think Iâm stupid.
