Doll House

“So you’re Molly’s bodyguard,” Jimmy said casually as he rubbed his chin. He accentuated this with a sly smile that said I’m onto your game. This was no mere manservant looking for his loaded employer’s spoiled brat daughter. This was a Replacement doing what Replacements do.

Jimmy was sure if this third-string mobster found Big Mouth, he’d drag her to whatever hell was waiting for people abducted by the alien’s minions. They’d turn her human body into a rotting DeadWalker while a Replacement, a carbon-copy pod person grown in a giant alien egg, would take her place.

The alien invaders’ plans were near perfect except for one wild variable they couldn’t fathom despite their unlimited intelligence and intergalactic knowledge: Jimmy.

“Be cool, Jimmy,” Jimmy whispered to himself. This was a game of chess and all the pieces were set up on the chessboard. Fortunately the floor was black and white checkerboard, and that helped with the analogy.

Of course, chess was too difficult for Jimmy to learn. He’d tried it out in an after-school program put on by the Royal Order of Chess Grandmasters and Asthmatics. Those were the pasty, anemic nerds who were bound to become tech giants once they graduated college at fifteen years old.

Jimmy did know checkers, though, and figured chess was just a snobbish pasty anemic nerd version of checkers. Either way, the game board was set, and Jimmy was about to say ‘king me’ with a pair of brass knuckles.

“Well, well, well, Molly’s bodyguard, Mr. Guido,” Jimmy said. He threw in extra sarcasm in case the alien Replacement had a difficult time understanding basic human inflections. “And what do you plan on doing with her?”

“With all the weirdness going on, I’m here to protect her. That’s my job.” Guido shifted, moving nervously. His voice, while still Italian-mobster sounding, also became stilted. Clearly a monster attempting to pass as human. Despite the unfathomable alien intelligence, they still hadn’t deciphered basic human emotion. That would be their downfall.

“Hmm, your job,” Jimmy mused. “Your job isn’t to tear apart my team and take over the world?”

Guido took a step back. Even from this distance Jimmy could feel the alien anger pouring from his artificial pores. Otherworldly hatred, shipped in from billions of light-years away, across the galaxy’s edge. “I know you,” he hissed, his voice now suddenly sounding dreadful and perilous. “I saw you in your lousy, lower-middle-income home in Apple Valley through your pathetic brother’s eyes. I am Reggie!” Obviously the mask was now off.

Jimmy took a step back at his brother’s name. So many crazy and impossible things had happened since he and Clancy had swung by his modest ranch home (which he felt was more upper middle class despite Guido’s assessment) in Apple Valley. There they’d met Replacement Reggie, who was nice to the point of being demented. It still sickened Jimmy.

Clearly, all the Replacements were linked together in some weird psychic chain. Much like Festus Crabb and Squash the pig in Unexplainable Paranormals. Or even Jimmy and his best friend/service dog, Max.
