Henry wasted no time. The moment they got back to the office he hit the phone, contacting some of the same people he had back when they had been searching for Charles.

The word on Nadine Smith appeared to support Dahl's own findings. She was, according to a collection of anecdotes Henry was given, the real deal. While none of the people he spoke to claimed to have actually met her in person, more than a few were able to share second- or third-hand tales of her successes dealing with troubled spirits. The most common account (Henry heard three independent versions) centred upon the haunting of a young boy. Some of the finer details differed, in one version the city was simply 'somewhere up north', in another it was Newcastle, in yet another Leeds, but the broad details matched up.

The story concerned a boy, who was the victim of poltergeist activity practically from the day he had been born. The episodes frequently left the child with bruises or abrasions. The family moved house, several times, but after a brief lull the attacks always resumed. In his first year at infant school a staff member informed child services about his injuries, prompting his parents, at their wits' end, desperate their son could be taken away from them, to look for help. After a number of false starts they found it in the shape of Nadine Smith. According to all versions of the story after a mere handful of visits Nadine dealt with the spirit and the attacks ceased, this time for good.

And yet, while it appeared Nadine Smith's name, deeds, and reputation were known, it still troubled Henry that no one claimed to have seen her work first-hand. Kate, though, was more forgiving. Given Nadine Smith's dim view of her peers, she argued, was it so surprising no one in the spiritual circuit knew her personally or had seen her work first-hand? If she valued her privacy, and exercised discretion regarding her clients, weren't accounts of her work almost inevitably destined to be second- or third-hand? Ultimately, Kate seemed to feel what Henry had discovered was sufficient.

A date was set. They would return to the house the following week.
