Fleur clasped Jack’s arm when he started to follow his daughter. “Give her a few minutes, Jack. She didn’t mean what she said. She’s in shock.”

He turned to face her with such anguish she wrapped her arms around his shoulders and hugged him to offer comfort. Although the circumstances were much different, she remembered the moment her mother’s surgeon had walked into the waiting room to tell her that her mother hadn’t survived the operation. She had been devastated and it had taken days for the reality to sink in. And although Kat’s anguish was apparent, Jack’s was concealed. She could feel his pain through his stoic persona.

Unexpectedly, he relaxed against her, was silent for a moment, and then sobbed. Fleur smoothed his hair and offered comforting words that she knew he wasn’t really hearing. He allowed her to hold him for a long time.
