Chapter Thirteen

I was very lucky that Mr. Brown didn’t ask me why I was late for his class because I had no intention of ever talking about what happened in the library. He simply told me to take my seat and went on with the days lesson. I let out a relieved breath. I don’t think I could have survived telling him the truth and I hadn’t been able to come up with a good enough lie.

After taking my seat, I spent the remaining twenty minutes of class trying not to think about Darian and our kiss. But knowing that people saw us, it was only a matter of time before everyone knew about it. And that made me nervous. The first thought that entered my mind was of Nolan. Despite our current rift, a small ache settled in my chest. I knew he was going to be mad when he found out about me and Darian, but it wasn’t right for him to tell me to stay away from Darian in the first place. He had no right to tell me who to date.

As soon as the bell rang, I hurried out the door with the hope of making it to my next class without anyone talking to me. Luckily, I made it. Not one person stopped me to ask about any rumors they may have heard. I smiled to myself once I was safely in my next class. Maybe the rumor mill wasn’t as bad as I thought.

Then again... maybe it was.

I had barely made it to my seat when I heard hoots and hollers fill the hallway outside the room. I watched from my seat as several students ran past the open door. I got up and stepped into the hallway to investigate. There was a large group of kids huddled around the opened exit doors at the end of the hall. They were pushing and shoving at each other, trying to get outside. I knew the scene well. There was a fight going on and everyone wanted to see it. I turned away with the intention of going back to my seat and ignoring what was happening. After all, kids got into fights at school all the time. And I had no desire to watch people beat up on each other.

However, I had only taken two steps when I heard someone yell something that froze me in place.

“Hit him! Kick his ass, Nolan!”

“Yeah! Punch him!”

I didn’t have time to think. I acted on pure instinct. I sprinted toward the exit doors at the end of the hall. After elbowing several people and stepping on a lot of toes, I pushed my way through the crowd and out the doors. What I saw when I got outside took my breath away. Nolan and Darian were engaged in a serious battle that made them look like professional fighters as they threw punches and kicks at each other.

“I warned you to stay away from her!” Nolan growled out loud and landed a brutal punch to Darian’s jaw that knocked his head backwards.
