THE NEXT DAY AT SCHOOL, the girls were still trying to figure out what to do. “Look, I want to dance just as much as you do, Rocky,” CeCe said as they walked down the stairs and into one of the main hallways. “And here’s an idea. What about community theater?”

Rocky considered that, then nodded. “Huh. That could work,” she admitted. She was surprised. CeCe had actually come up with something useful!

Her friend grinned at her. “Great! We can audition for Beauty and the Beast!” She tossed back her long red hair and smiled. “I can play Beauty and you can be the—”

Rocky interrupted her quickly. “Don’t even say it,” she warned, raising her hands, her fingers out like claws.

CeCe’s smile faltered a little, but she tried to save it. “See,” she offered weakly, “you’re a natural!”

Rocky turned and walked away, toward a bench off to the side.

CeCe followed her, of course. “Come on, I’m trying,” she pointed out, sitting beside Rocky. “What, do you think some big dance opportunity is just going to waltz right up to us?”

Just then they heard noise coming down the hall. A second later, six girls in matching outfits—blue John Hughes High School Bulldogs T-shirts, darker blue skirts, red tights, and white tennis shoes—marched around the corner. It was the school’s Spirit Squad!

“Go team, fight team, get in the spirit, yay,” the girls called out as they walked into the center of the hall. But they said it without any enthusiasm, like they were reciting some boring speech. All in all, they looked like they’d rather be anywhere but there, and doing anything but that.

CeCe and Rocky just stared.

The girl in front, named Margie, stepped forward. “Come see the Spirit Squad perform at the pep rally this Friday,” she announced with the same lack of enthusiasm. She halfheartedly raised one fist—“Go”—then let it drop—“or don’t.”

Rocky sighed dramatically as the Spirit Squad members wandered away. “Oh yes,” she told CeCe, “the Spirit Squad. You know, they should have their own TV show: So You Know You Can’t Dance.”

CeCe, however, had just had a brilliant idea. “Actually,” she replied, “I know two amazing dancers on that squad.”

Rocky studied her. Was this a joke? “Who?” she asked finally.

Her friend beamed at her. “Me and you!”

“Huh.” Rocky considered that, then shrugged. “It’s better than being the Beast.”

She stood and made her way down the hall. CeCe was right behind her. Could this be the answer to their dancing woes? she wondered. At least Rocky seemed interested—that was a start!
