BEN WAS GETTING ANNOYED. He took a gamble going down the road opposite the route to the O’ Riley farm and it wasn’t paying off. The miles spent going down the path were taking their toll on the already sleepy sheriff. He rubbed his eyes and found a place to turn around.

As he made his way back up the road, he thought about Jake. The boy was no good. He was a rabble-rouser and had no respect for elders. He also promised to come back to his daughter. He’d messed with the bull, and Ben would supply the horns.

He then decided to ponder on Moe for a bit. The man had been through a lot. So had Jake. However, Jake left him, too. He left Cradle Creek behind. Now, his father was telling wild stories of a monster bear in the area. While Ben had been called out there on numerous occasions, he only went once. He saw the cage and the hair. He had to admit it was weird but it was also something that could’ve been fabricated. Ben was a firm believer in what he could see on this earth. He wasn’t a religious man per se, but he did believe in a higher power from time to time. Even that was sometimes tested after his wife died.

Coming to the beginning of the fork in the road, he saw another car coming by. It was Jasper’s. With him were Scooter and Ruth. They pulled up alongside each other and rolled down their windows.

“Howdy, Sheriff. What brings you all the way out here?” Jasper asked.

“I’m lookin’ for my daughter and Christine. They headed out this way and I… Lost track of them.” Ben hated to admit that last part. Maybe he had lost his touch after all.

“Where were they headin’” Ruth asked.

“I assumed the O’ Riley place, but I had an inkling they were heading down the other way.”

“Towards the necker’s nook?” Jasper chuckled.

“The what?” Ben asked.

“You haven’t heard about the necker’s nook?” Scooter asked, genuinely surprised.

“No, son. I haven’t. Where is it?”

“It’s probably a good eight miles down the path you just took,” Jasper explained.

“We should go with you,” Scooter said.

“Why?” Ben asked.

“Yeah, why?” Ruth asked, turning to Scooter.

“Because it’s overgrown now. I was hired to trim it a week ago but only got half of it done.”

“You really think Robin would go there to see Jake?” Ruth asked the sheriff.

Ben thought about it. “Normally I would’ve said no. I trust her, but she did act suspiciously when I saw her in the bar’s parking lot.”

“Tell ya what, Sheriff,” Jasper began. “We’ll head up to necker’s nook with ya. If they aren’t there, we’ll head to the O’ Riley property.”

“Okay, sounds like a plan,” Ben said.

Jasper drove ahead a bit and then gave the sheriff a bit to turn around and then tailgate him.
