Report #6

Hello, my name is Bill, and I spent my early days in rural Oklahoma—Chouteau, to be exact. My story takes place back in the sixties—a time when there were few things a young boy could do for entertainment. And that was especially true in desolate Oklahoma. Still, those days are some of my fondest to look back upon, regardless of the horror that I faced. I’m convinced that it made me stronger, mentally speaking.

Growing up in Chouteau, my pals and I frequently rode our bikes all over. It rarely got cold enough to prevent us from wandering around. We loved finding new streams and watering holes where we could cool down and search for small critters. Well, there was this one summer day where we rode our bikes particularly far toward a patch of woods I had never visited. I was with my friends Christopher and Wally. They were great guys to have my back. If you’ve ever seen movies like The Goonies or Stand by Me, those are near-perfect portrayals of our relationship.

None of us had expected to go swimming that day, so none of us had brought our bathing suits. But that rarely stopped us. When we found one of the clearest ponds I had ever seen, we all jumped in with whatever shorts we had on. I remember thinking that it was the single best swimming location we had ever been to. If you’ve ever lived in states like Texas and Oklahoma, you likely know that these swimming locations are scattered throughout the land, and all you need to do is find them. At least, in my day, it wasn’t uncommon to get a beautiful swimming hole to yourself for an entire afternoon. But this was one day where I wished we hadn’t been alone.

The water was, hands down, some of the clearest I had ever come across. It looked so inviting, prompting my friends and me to race each other toward the water. But it was because of that excitement we didn’t scan what else was in the emerald-green liquid before getting in. Wally was the first to notice the strangeness.

“Guys, you’ll never believe what’s down here!” he shouted after returning to the surface. We were near the center of the watering hole when Christopher and I held our breath and followed Wally down to whatever he wanted to show us. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it. There it was—a real human skull resting at the bottom. The watering hole was maybe only six or seven feet at its deepest point, but there were crevices everywhere, making it impossible to see everything around us.

When the three of us emerged at the surface, Christopher told us that he had found what looked to be a ribcage with an arm bone attached to it—also belonging to a human. I couldn’t tell how old those bones might’ve been because the cool water could’ve been preserving them. But I’m no scientist.

Even though I was a little
