Chapter 19

Edward

It was beginning to get dark as I left the FBI building. I had spent the last few hours collecting every detail that I could to finish a murder timeline that began over thirty years ago. It would have taken much longer if the files weren’t missing so much information. Every murder along that road, at least the ones with facial lacerations, had been ruled something other than a homicide. I saved everything onto a flash drive so I could share it with Carol.

Of all the things spinning in my head, all the troubling thoughts, the memories, the distracting visions, she was the only thought that brought me joy. I honestly couldn’t wait to meet with her. It wasn’t what I had found, or the progress I had made with Charles, so much as it was the anticipation of seeing her again, and maybe I was setting myself up to be disappointed. She was far out of my league, and regardless, I had to free myself of my sickness before I could be in a real relationship. That horrid vision had taken me from her last time, suggested that I might hurt her. I couldn’t imagine hurting her, but how could I trust myself after what happened with that young man from the bar? Still, I couldn’t help wanting to be with her in that hotel room. Maybe if I told her about my visions, she might understand. Maybe she could help me put my own demons to rest.

I was halfway across the parking lot, nearly to my car when a parked car at the other end of the lot suddenly turned on its headlights and drove forward quickly towards me. I froze, not sure what to do. It was aimed right at me, ready to run me down. For a moment I thought that it would, but instead it pulled up beside me and stopped suddenly, tires screeching.

Inside was the woman from Charles’s office. I remembered her name, Ms. Hart. She looked upset. I took a breath to calm myself.

“Agent Langdon?” she asked.

“Wow, I thought you were going to run me over,” I answered catching my breath.

“I’m sorry, I was waiting for you to come out. I didn’t want to miss my chance to talk to you,” she said.

“Why do you need to talk to me, aren’t you working with Agent Kegler?”

“He hasn’t helped me at all, just tells me what I want to hear and does nothing. I’ve seen you before, I know you work with him, and you seem like an honest person. Is there somewhere private we can go and talk.”

“Sure,” I answered, astounded that someone else assumed that I was an honest person. That is not what I would consider myself. “What are we discussing?” I asked.

“Well, I have some information about a state senator, one that Agent Kegler works with, and he hasn’t done anything at all.”

“Senator Kingston?” I asked, surprised.

“Yes,” she answered.

This might be helpful to our case I thought, “I’m meeting a detective tonight in East St Louis to go over a case we’re working on.
