Stopped by TFM

Even if they do not like the taste of humans, lampreys have caused plenty of other kinds of trouble for them. For centuries, sea lampreys could not move into the Great Lakes from the Atlantic Ocean because they were stopped by Niagara Falls. Then the Welland Canal and St. Lawrence Seaway were built to connect the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. Lampreys found they could use the canal as easily as the ships could. Soon, they had made their way into all the Great Lakes, where they feasted on the blood of millions of fish. Soon, many types of fish began to disappear. Fishermen feared there would be nothing left in the Great Lakes except lampreys.1 Miles of nets were strung up to catch the bloodsuckers. Even electric fences were built across streams. Nothing worked until scientists tried a chemical called TFM, which killed lampreys but did not seem to harm any other fish. Soon, the lamprey population in the Great Lakes began to fall. Fish and wildlife agencies then restocked the lake with trout and coho salmon, a non-native species in the Great Lakes region.2
