The boy Makate went searching for Wabishk, who had run off like it was a game, but instead found Old Man surrounded by snow and sitting beneath a confused tree that looked like a broken spider. Makate sat with Old Man for a long time while he played a flute and let the wind whisper secrets in his ear, then asked, "Akiwenzii, why does Wabishk run so far?"

Old Man stopped his song and lowered his flute, keeping his eyes closed. "Because the fear is in him, and it pulls him along like a strong gust of wind."

"Can I hold him so he does not run?"

Old Man said, "Yes, but the wind is strong and does not lie."

The boy Makate asked, "Will it help if I sing to him?"

"Oh, yes," Akiwenzii told him. "It is the music that guides, it is the music that heals."

Makate said, "Debwewin nindakonamawaa," and stood up on the soft snow, but the ground kept moving under his feet and he could not stand straight to hold Wabishk's truth. The broken spider tree leaned far over to whisper something into his ear, but he did not hear. He watched Wabishk walk across the desert sand with his heart in his hands and became frightened. Then he heard Old Man's voice in the song of the flute.

"Hold him very tightly so you don't fall."

Makate leapt to the top branch of the spider tree and pounced on Wabishk, wrapping his body around his brother and letting the lying wind come.

Makate's song filled the vastness, and still Wabishk fought him.

The looking glass flickered, brightened into a solid wall of white light. Alex shaded his eyes with both arms and let the light embrace him. Someone called from the other side of the glass, but it wasn't Jade. This voice sounded childlike and much more frightened—the same voice that had beckoned him to Joe's room that bloody night almost a year ago. From somewhere within and beyond the glass, he heard the child scream and begin to cry in heart-wrenching wails. The sobs rose and fell then faded into troubling silence.

"Luke?" His own voice trailed toward him as though from a very far distance.

Alex heard his name again. A shock of fear rattled his senses. But there's no fear here. Only light and warmth. He dropped one arm from his face and held out the other for balance. Sliding his shoes along the carpet, he moved toward the illuminated mirror like a blind man feeling his way until he stood inches from the glass. Brilliant luminescence enveloped him, surrounding him with heat and an unmistakable sense of peace and calm. Water poured from his eyes, drenching his face with salty tears as he peered up through the streaming rays at Joe's bedroom ceiling. It seemed so far away.

Someone said his name again, the small voice scared, weak, alone. Blinded, Alex raised his hand to touch the glass, but there was nothing solid there.
