The waiting really is the hardest part.

Once Carver’s blood drips into Brian’s mouth, and I’m certain Brian has swallowed a lot of it, Carver seals up his wrist and the two of us sit in the tree trunk together in silence. We watch my brother’s body as the candles slowly burn.

Neither one of us really feels like talking, which is probably for the best.

There’s not really much to say. I should probably thank Carver for what he just did for me, but the words don’t feel like they’re strong enough. They don’t feel powerful enough. I just wait instead.

Carver pulls his knees up to his chest and wraps his arms around them. He rests his chin on his knees and looks at Brian.

“You aren’t what I thought you’d be,” he whispers.

“What did you think we’d be?”

“Mean. Monsters.”

Like my father.

Like the villagers.

I hate the idea that the vampires are taught that humans are cruel and mean, but we are. The humans in the woods haven’t done a very good job trying to get along with the vampires. Instead, we’ve created this sort of world where it’s us against them. It’s us or them. It’s a dangerous sort of mentality.

“I’m sorry,” I whisper to Carver.

I’m sorry for the world we all live in. I’m sorry for the way that humans have shown our true colors. We’ve let the vampires know over and over again just how little we think of them.

Apparently, Carver has taken this to heart.

Now, as I sit in the little tree with the vampire boy who may or may not have just saved my brother’s life, I can’t help but wonder what my parents would think if they actually knew. What would their response be? What would they think about the fact that they chased their kid to his doom, but that a “monster” saved him?

My father might have a heart attack.

That thought is slightly calming to me.

After a little while, Carver starts to doze off. He keeps jolting back awake. It’s probably sunrise, which means he needs to sleep. He won’t be able to stay away much longer even if he wanted to. I’m certain that he’s scared, though. Vampires are taught never to fall asleep around anyone else.

Especially humans.

“Hey,” I tell him, gently touching his shoulder. “You can sleep, okay? I won’t let anything happen to you.” I’ll protect him.

“Really?”

“Really.”

“You know...you aren’t like the other humans,” he tells me quietly.

“You’ve met humans before?”

“A few,” he says. “They weren’t very nice.”

“Yeah, well, people can be dicks.”

“Dicks?”

Okay, so apparently, human slang isn’t something vampires learn, either.

“Some humans aren’t very nice,” I correct myself, and he seems to understand that much, at least. “I suppose that’s how some vampires are too, huh?”

“Yeah,” he nods, yawning. “Like my dad.”

“Your dad?”

“Yeah. He cares more about his stupid lion than he does about me.”

Carver falls asleep then, fast and hard, and I stare at him, suddenly wishing there was a way to wake up vampires once they pass out.

The lion?

Him and the lion?

Instantly, I’m jerked back to my childhood memory of the vampire, the girl, and the lion.
