âElves have always been something of an enemy to the humans. It started out as a sneaky enemy. The enemy you let into your house because youâve got no proof of any duplicity. Then after the nasty business with Dorianââ
âThe Elven Revolution,â I said.
âYes,â she said with a sneer. It was another title of mockery. It was an attempted revolution. Obviously, otherwise thereâd be elves everywhere in the modern day.
âThe point is, most books on elves were either destroyed or hidden. Humans didnât want to acknowledge our existence after theyâd pretty much driven us all off or wiped us out.â
âThe only books on elves at the Hall are kept in the restricted section. And books written by elves are forbidden in the city.â
âWhich is a shame. Thereâs a lot you could learn from elves. Thereâs things we can do with magic that you humans will probably never figure out on your own. If our species had held a true alliance I think weâd both be better off for it.â
I wondered if the elves would have so much trouble getting through Magravalâs blood magic. Zaleria had told me that her people were naturally good at blood magic. I wasnât about to ask though.
âAnyway, I digress.â She flicked her ponytail onto the opposite shoulder and continued. âMy parents were part of a group of elves who were planning to overthrow the humans. They were naive. They thought it would be as easy as killing everyone at City Hall. They made plans to storm City Hall and from there assume control of the city.â
âWhat about the police? What about Dorian?â Iâd heard of bad plans but this was one of the worst thought out schemes Iâd ever heard of. What kind of a moron thought they could take over an entire city by gaining control of one building? It would be like trying to take over the entire country just by taking the Houses of Parliament, or trying to take the United States by only taking over the White House.
âThe plan was to take the main centre of government and then work their way out from there. They thought that controlling City Hall would make the police more willing to listen to them.â
âNo chance,â I interjected. Maybe if a group of humans had taken City Hall, but not a bunch of elves.
She nodded in agreement. âBeing the daughter of existing rebels, I was inducted into the group when I came of age. I was taught to fight. Taught to kill. I was turned into a little soldier. I was particularly good at stealth killings. And then one day in 1978 we attacked. The main group went to City Hall. Me and the other assassins were sent to kill the councillors who werenât at the Hall. Once Iâd completed my mission I went to City Hall and joined the others. Taking the building had been fairly easy. There were about three hundred of us. Not all the humans had been killed. Some had been simply arrested.
