Later that day, I received a dinner summons from my father. As much as I wanted to refuse it, I knew I couldnât. I was still duty-bound to obey him, even if my inheritance had been torn away from me by a woman who had yet to become my stepmother. How Chamberly possessed so much power in such a small amount of time, I had no idea. All I knew was that I felt powerless to do anything about it. The full moon was tomorrow night, which meant there was some expectation of freedom there. Certainly, my father wouldnât expect me to perform my duty the same way if I wasnât going to inherit the pack. Hell, maybe I could explore more of the grounds as a regular wolf rather than a future Alpha.
But maybe that was expecting too much.
I tried not to think about it. The last thing I wanted was to be disappointed the way I was now. I couldnât even use training as physical release. Rainey wouldnât let me even watch because of my father.
It was like I was part of both worlds and none at the same time.
I stopped by my room during the training session, deciding I had to change. If my father truly summoned me to dinner for some reason, he wouldnât want me to show up in a uniform. However, the second I opened the door and stepped inside, Rianne was there.
I scowled. âIâll come back,â I stated, not bothering to hide the annoyance I had at seeing her there. She stood over her bed, clothes in disarray over the surface, sorting through what she had. If we were on speaking terms, she would have asked me my opinion on the couple of outfits she had narrowed down. Though what she was doing, what she was dressing for, I had no idea.
âYou better not,â she called the second I turned my back. âYour father would want you to be dressed, and quickly. He stopped by asking for you. As far as heâs concerned, youâre already late. And sheâs going to be there, so, you know.â She shrugged. âDonât let her win.â
âWhat would you know about it,â I snapped. âYou like to keep reminding me how ignorant I am, how privileged. What would you know about whatâs expected of you?â
Rianne frowned, and I knew I struck a nerve. I refused to feel guilty for it, even though tendrils of the emotion threatened to spill in my gut. She wasnât allowed to make me feel guilty. This all could have been avoided. She could have taken my side, but she didnât.
âIâm sorry youâre hurting,â she said.
I rummaged around my closet, not bothering to respond. This time, guilt did cut across me, but I ignored it. She was okay with me losing my inheritance. She was okay with me losing everything.
I scowled at a particularly short dress and shoved it to the side. I didnât want to think about that. I didnât want to acknowledge that they might actually like each other.
