JUNE 11 â 25 DAYS UNTIL THE STORM
Oscar Reyes was now whole again in the physical sense, having been sprayed out by a farm sprinkler over three miles from town. He had reshaped himself from his water form in an easy manner so pleasant he almost willed himself to disassemble again, just for the fun of coming back together. The only thing that stopped him was thinking of his beautiful wife and his two daughters.
What if he could not reassemble a second time? Heâd never see them again, or if he did, it would be by the happenstance luck of the water cycle, and he wasnât sure how apt they would be to embrace him if he were rushing past in the sink or falling outside as a ball of hail.
He guessed it was around noon. The sun was high and happy, but he felt a sadness descend upon him because although he had been a part of the textbook water cycle, he had not yet evaporated.
He frowned deeply at the thought.
Not having evaporated made him feel like he was a novice at being water, and renewed his desire to reliquify. But again, he thought of René, Bella, and Maggie. He wanted to see them, to hold them, and that trumped the possible gratifications of evaporation.
He was in a corn field. Having been planted only two months before, the plants were still just low, grassy blades, giving him the false sensation that he was a giant. He was dressed only in the bathrobe and underwear heâd been wearing when he went down the drain, but he thought nothing of this. Instead, his mind was dominated by the need to rejoin his family.
He was a man disconnected from the will of the beautiful, red-haired woman, and as such, must impart his own desires to himself instead of just giving into the bodily lust to become water and get evaporated just for the fun of it.
Making his way for the road, he saw a yellow Volkswagen bug fly by. The heads turned toward him, but he paid them no mind. His wife didnât drive a bug, and his daughters werenât old enough for licenses.
He oriented himself in what he figured was the direction of the town and began walking, feeling a warmth spread within himself that he would not yet embrace: happiness. He imagined what it would be like to be kissed by any of his sweet girls. It was only luck that Officer Warkow was driving the next passing vehicle, with his partner, a green, powerfully built young woman named Claudette Bryant, in the passenger seat. He had seen the posted report and knew that Oscar Reyes was a wanted man. He himself had eaten at Burger Amigo on numberless occasions, and recognized the mystery walker in the bathrobe at once. Officer Warkow pulled over, thirty yards ahead of Oscar. Bryant got out with him, and Warkow told Oscar to raise his hands above his head.
The venerable Mexican cook experienced a wave of confusion.
