Chapter Twenty-Nine

The soft orange afternoon light flooded the room, sending the glittering stone shooting rainbows across her blankets, as Aereen sat up, shouting Ruven’s name. Her eyes frantically searched the room for the wolf or Ruven, but she only found it empty. Aereen fingers brushed her forehead. Finding the skin warm to the touch. Her deep sigh filled the room. She flopped back down, cursing her traitorous body. Her gaze slipped to Lili’s made bed—it hadn’t been slept in. Lili crept back in during the early hours of the morning, only to slip back between the sheets and rise pretending she had never left. Lili’s smile was brighter, and she had more skip in her step. She and Alwin had shared longer, lingering glances, and more frequent touches.

I have a feeling you know where she is going, who she is going to, the voice whispered.

Aereen curled on her side, her scarred hand raised, dancing through the rainbow of light. That is her and Alwin’s business, whatever she is doing is making her happy, Aereen replied.

As the Lord of the Wolves is doing for you? the voice replied, sharply.

Days had passed since her brush with the shadow spider, but each fleeting moment spent with Gerrick, wrapped around each other in the dark alcoves of the palace, grew a soft feeling inside of her. With each kiss, smile and laugh, the conflicted feeling of feeling anything for the lord inside of her unravelled.

He has made me…feel something. Was it joy? Or was it something less fleeting? More real, permanent.

Aereen dragged herself from the warmth of her bed to the table. Eyes still on the maroon scar that cut through the lines on her hand. A small, silver tin shone in the light, with a note underneath it, resting on the worn wood. She picked up the tin and unscrewed the lid. A strong, spicy scent filled her nostrils, slamming into her. Making her cringe. A soothing balm. Her fingers flicked open the note. Written in scrawled handwriting, it read:
