Chapter 9

I don’t get a chance to look around, Beaumont is practically running through the house. He finally stops after several twists and turns, then bends down and places me gently into an armchair, right beside a giant fireplace. For the first time in my life, I’m not afraid of the fire. I reach my hand out and touch the flames. Heat licks up my skin, but it doesn’t hurt. It almost feels like the fire is kissing my skin softly, like butterfly wings.

“That is so cool.”

My head flies up and I stare at the girl standing in front of me.

“Hi, are you uncle Ryker’s girlfriend? He doesn’t usually bring girls home with him. Normally they just go out and have sex, then he comes home by himself.”

My jaw was on the floor before she started speaking, but now I think it went through to whatever basement the guys have. Her spun gold hair is so long, it’s kissing the floor every time she moves. Her eyes are the same emerald green as Beaumont’s. She has his beautiful bones structure, just more defined and feminine.

“I’m Darina, you know, like Sarina but with a D. What’s your name? Are you going to be staying with uncle Ryker for a while? I hope you do, I never get to have any friends over. Daddy says it’s to keep me safe, but I think he really just wants to keep the boys away from me. How long have you been dating my uncle? What do you think about babies? Are you and Uncle Ryker going to get married?”

I start to laugh, I can’t help it. She’s so energetic and talkative. I’m not entirely sure how anyone is supposed to answer her million mile an hour questions but she’s so animated as she talks; Her hands waving around and her eyes darting from one thing to the next.

“Whoa, Darina? What are you doing in my apartment? You know you aren’t allowed in here if I’m not here.” Ryker’s voice is stern, but it’s ruined by the smirk on his face. He ruffles the girl’s golden hair as he walks passed her.

“Uncle Ryker? Are you going to marry her? Is she having your baby? Is that why she is moving in with you? Are you two having the sex?” The little girl screws her face up as she says sex and I stifle a giggle.

“Whoa, Darina, stop. Emberly is a friend. Got it? No sex, no babies and no wedding. Okay?” Ryker winks at me before turning his attention back to the girl. "Not that I haven't tried to get her to go out with me." I watch her reaction closely and her shoulders slump. She goes from happy and vibrant to dull and dreary in the space of a few seconds.

“So, she isn’t your girlfriend?” Darina asks in a small voice.

I laugh gain, a full body laugh that has me clutching the sides of my ribs. My laughter is cut off though as she
