After some time exploring the dungeon’s seemingly countless tunnels, we saw a faint light and heard what sounded like many flapping wings. We crept to where a tunnel curved, and craned our heads around for a peek.

I stared at the creepiest sight I’d ever seen. In the vast ice cavern ahead of us were dozens of people with bats clinging to their backs. All these folks—adults and kids—were very small, with olive-colored skin like Ugo, and most had the same dark brown wavy hair.

“Didn’t Ugo say his clan had been destroyed by the glacier?” I whispered to Stony.

He nodded, still staring.

“Um, Stony, would you mind going in there and questioning these nice folks while I, uh, stand guard?”

Stony smiled. “Sure,” he said. “And perhaps if we are successful in returning to the surface, I can help you overcome your fear of bats.”

“I’m not afraid of bats!” I lied.

“It’s okay, Lug,” he said. “If one is not afraid, how can one overcome fear and become a true—”

“Stony!” I snapped.

“Yes?”

“I’m. Not. Afraid.”

Even in the dim light, I could see the flash of his big bucktoothed smile.
