I’M ABOUT TO go on break when Keith walks into the store. I’m so not in the right headspace to deal with anything he wants to talk about, so I slink away to the bathroom to hide from him. But when I come back out, he’s still there - standing in the seasonal aisle, looking at Valentine’s day decorations, holding a heart shaped candy bowl with a blank expression on his face.

Well, shit. Guess I have to deal with him after all.

“Hello there, sir. Are you looking for anything in particular today? We have a lovely selection of candy heart molds if you’re interested.”

He looks up and gives me a small smile.

“I’m sorry,” he says immediately. Well, that wasn’t what I expected. “Look, I know you’re working right now, but I just needed to… I need to apologize. For last night. I shouldn’t have talked you into coming. I shouldn’t have put you into that situation at all. It was fucked up of me to do, and I just. I mean, is there anything I can do to make it up to you?”

I shrug.

“Not really. The best thing we can do is move on and go mountain biking together once the weather is good enough again.”

“So… June?” he asks.

“Exactly,” I say with a laugh.

He rubs the back of his neck and looks down at his feet.

“I guess I should let you get back to work. But, can I at least take you out for some real cake after you get off? I feel like you at least deserve that.”

I nod, because he does owe me free cake. Surprisingly I’m not turned off the idea of cake after seeing him get sick off the sheet cake last night.

“Cool, when are you off?” he asks.

“Four.”

“See you then.”

He sets the candy bowl back down and leaves the store.
