“He has been a prisoner for all this time, in the hope we could sell him to some Russian contact so that we could survive this hellish revolution. But now that Carlo is lost it seems pointless. Money will not bring him back. I look at the boy suffering and I no longer see hope. My family is gone and I am sending a child to his death? I cannot. I am leaving Paris.
