Chapter 14

“What does it mean?” Tess said. Jake just stared at the photo hoping that if he looked at it long enough, the cogs in his mind would fall into place and he’d recall the events of that day. But he couldn’t. It was as if someone had taken his memory and fragmented it. He tossed it down and began to explore the house. The entire time Tess kept peppering him with the same question over and over. Eventually he snapped.

“I don’t know! Get off my back. I’m as confused as you are.”

“Tess,” Michael gestured with his head for her to leave him alone. She went downstairs and Michael stepped forward. He was rooting through the cupboards, looking inside boxes, hoping that he might find something else that would trigger his memory.

Michael stood at the door watching him with his arms crossed.

“What is it?” Jake asked.

“When I said I didn’t have a dream, I lied.”

Jake was on his hands and knees looking under the bed when he looked up. “Why would you do that?”

“Because I didn’t want to upset Tess.”

His brow furrowed.

“I saw her die, Jake, with my own eyes. She was dead or unconscious.” He paused. “I don’t know what that means or whether these dreams are even dreams. Perhaps they are some kind of premonition.”

“No, no, they’re not.”

“How can you know that?”

“I just do.”

He continued looking. His frustration spilled over and he tossed a box across the room.

“Nothing.”

He brushed past Michael without saying anything and trudged down the stairs.

“Where are you going?”

“To find out what this building is,” he said holding up the map. “There’s a reason I marked this off and I need to know why this is in pieces and where the other parts are.”

“I’m going with you.”

“No, stay here.”

“And do what?”

Jake stopped at the bottom of the stairs and looked up at him. “Don’t you work at Monroe’s diner? Why don’t you go over there and see what you can find out?”

“I’m going with you.”

“We both are,” Tess said coming out of the living room into the hallway. “After all that’s happened, it’s best we stick together.”

Jake exhaled hard. “Okay but let’s get moving. It doesn’t look like we are going to get much daylight today.”

“What’s up with that?” Tess said. “I’ve been keeping track of this since we arrived and each day the days have been getting shorter and shorter. Yesterday it was dark by three.” She glanced at the clock on the wall. “By my estimate, if it continues to go the way it is, it will be dark even sooner.”

“No idea, just grab what you need and meet me outside,” Jake said ducking out. While he waited, he pulled out a cigarette. They were only inside a few more minutes. Tess came out with a small plastic bag full of some cans of food, bread and bottles of water that she’d filled up from the tap.

“We don’t need all of that,” Michael said. The two of them started arguing back and forth.

“It doesn’t matter, let’s just go.
