I fell asleep on the train, face mashed up against the window.

I had a dream. A nightmare.

There was a man coming up the stairs.

He shouldn’t have been there.

I was in my mother’s house. She’d left me there.

I stood on the landing and watched as the man climbed slowly.

I saw him. His face. The intruder.

I struggled to breathe, out of fear, and because there was a rope around my neck.

No. Around the lamb’s neck.

It stood beside me, staring up at me with sweet black eyes.

I woke up panting, scared. My own hands were wringing my neck. I was still wearing the necklace, my necklace. A fucking pentagram necklace.

Had anyone noticed? Had anyone seen?

I fumbled for the clasp. My fingers were too clumsy, my nails too brittle. I struggled.

Off. I wanted it off. Needed it off.

I clamped two shaking fists around the chain and yanked. There was a loud, ugly clang, and the necklace fell into my hands. Clasp broken.

The necklace later found its way into a trash can at Penn Station.

Laid to rest where it belonged. In hell.
