A job is different than a career. Common advice given to college students faced with choosing their major for career preparation is simple: follow your heart. The memoirs in this chapter reveal an incredible depth of possibilities for youth to choose their professional life path. They also demonstrate the difficulty in achieving and maintaining competence in any chosen career. Acknowledging what Harvard University professor Howard Gardner calls “multiple intelligences,” in his 1983 groundbreaking book Frames of Mind, adults who mentor students must steer youth to better understand the various capacities they have for excellence and the learning styles best suited to realizing their full potential in a range of areas. Just as standardized tests do not measure intelligence, not all career placement guides present the full range of a person’s vocational choices. If I had been asked what I wanted to be in high school, I would not have chosen “professor” because I did not know anyone who did this work. However, with the proper encouragement in college I was able to realize my passion for reading and writing and create a career doing what I love.

My educational philosophies and experiences create a professional memoir and provide a glimpse of my career development. The road to my work as a professor has been long, which I make clearer by the personal memoir in the final chapter. I argue that work does not simply reflect personal interest; it also speaks volumes about personal values and the impact guidance has had on shaping a professional self. Katherine Dunham’s model shows us that personal and professional selves take place in a global context. A close look at international exchange and the connection with identity development is warranted.
