Glad to be back in regular clothes again—even if it was just military fatigues and T-shirt with a trench over the top—I left Solomon’s house at after 6 a.m. to find Haedemus still waiting outside.

“You’re still here,” I said, stopping beside him.

“Yes,” he said. “Despite a ridiculously long wait.”

“You deserve worse.”

Haedemus sighed. “I was rather hoping we were past all this.”

I snorted. “Yeah, right.”

“Come on, Ethan. I said I was sorry, didn’t I?”

“What you did was despicable and disgusting. I hope you know that.” I shook my head. “Those poor people. Those poor horses.”

Haedemus looked away. “You should never have let me—”

“Don’t even fucking say it. I tried to stop you.”

“Not hard enough. Didn’t you see I was suffering? That I just needed something to numb the pain?”

“Fuck off, Haedemus. Go see a fucking shrink next time.”

“A shrink,” he said. “Yes, that might be—”

“I wasn’t serious about that, you idiot.”

“Still, it might be—”

“No, it wouldn’t. I don’t have time for this.” I climbed up onto him and took hold of the reins. “Let’s go. Back to the yard.”

“You seem stressed, Ethan,” Haedemus said as he trotted away before breaking into a gallop. “Maybe we should both see a shrink, hmm? I’d like a professional opinion on some of my behavior. I think I might have deep-seated trauma, possibly caused by—”

“Too much bullshit.”

“Your sensitivity sucks, Ethan.”

“So does your breath.”

“I said sucks, not stinks.”

“Whatever.”
