Whether You Do or Donât
Darias sat on the garageâs frozen gravel, his back against a rover, streaming the security recordings of Kathrynâs crime scene on his helmetâs visor. He paused the video, observing a crystal-clear image of Kathrynâs face in her final sitting pose. He zoomed in, examining every detail of her crystalized skin, then locking in on her frozen, open eyes. She left no hint of the emotion running through her mind in her final moments. Darias wondered if she was in pain or had any regrets in life similar to the magnitude of what he now suffered.
With a flick of his eyes, his written confession displayed. He reread it again, probably for the twentieth time. He felt good about it. The words werenât to his eloquent standards, but they adequately explained the rationale behind his decisions over the past few days and the timeline they occurred. He didnât sound like he was trying to make excuses, merely trying to state the facts as he knew them.
He had taken many questionable actions over his career and his rise to the top of Houstonâs political spectrum, but none of them compared to the recent events. In less than forty-eight hours, he had gone from Houstonâs esteemed executive director to a conspirator, a mass-murderer, and someone unworthy of the acclimated airflow he breathed.
Adamâs words had been a slap-in-the-face, enabling Darias to finally see a clear reflection of himself in the mirror. Darias wasnât sure how his mind had clouded each slippery step he had taken. Was it simply a risk of human nature to overanalyze past actions until a justification is found? Or was he simply a fool, played by Nikolai, a grandmaster at the game of politics.
He addressed his confession to Yuan, Adam, and O. He didnât know why he included O, but it felt like the right thing to do. Perhaps it implied an apology.
He sent the message.
Darias pushed his back up against the rover again, mimicking Kathrynâs death posture. He noted a bit of irony about her death. Gelderâs project had put things in motion that ultimately killed her, yet if Gelderâs project was successful in reigniting the sun, she could not have died of hypothermia. He surveyed the garage one last time, seeing that it looked nearly identical as in the recording. He wondered if his final facial expression would look like Kathrynâs, then removed his helmet.
