A short while later, Bishop rolled to his feet, panting and retching, staggering slightly as he adjusted to the beast he had become. He stretched each limb out, shaking it, then reared up on his hind legs and let out a savage roar as a final shudder rippled his hide. The forest fell silent as it echoed through the night.

The massive bear dropped to all fours once more and began lumbering towards the scent it picked up earlier. Trees blurred past and branches barely glanced off his fur as he maneuvered his bulk towards the riverbank. He could hear the water rushing and breaking around the rocks, taste the crisp metallic of the river.

Blood was in the air, faint but there. Coppery and rich, still fresh, the scent was strong in his snout. Someone was injured upriver, most likely Erin or Casey. He hoped not, but he had picked up no other human scents. If Troy would have let him go alone, it would have been faster, but he would locate them tonight, take Troy to them tomorrow, and be done. Around him, the forest resumed its night song, coming back to life after his primal call had faded away without a following attack. Between the snow-covered spruce ahead of him, he could see the silvery gleam of the river and headed straight for it.

He bounded down the bank into the stream; he drank his fill, then reared up to sniff the air once more. He caught the scent stronger here and began a swift run upriver, his heavy paws swift but silent on the packed snow. His human side had only one thought. Don’t let me be too late.
