Do Carrots Really Love Tomatoes?

Actually, as it turns out, no. Tomatoes aren’t actually that crazy about carrots.

Tomato roots release a chemical that apparently keeps pests away from carrots – however, this same chemical also stunts carrots, and the effects of this chemical can affect the carrot even a foot and a half away!

So not only do tomatoes not like carrots, but they’d rather keep the carrots at a distance, thank you.

There’s probably something to companion gardening, but most of the benefit between plants is simply having plants live in a polycultural setup instead of a monoculture. Nature hates a monoculture. If you have a field all of one plant, she’s going to do her best to kill off a bunch of the plants and interseed them with a bunch of weeds. However, when you mix together a bunch of different species in one area, plant health improves overall. Some scientific studies out there indicate that plants are, for the most part, social beings that create communities among themselves, and they prosper when they do.

You can also set up symbiotic relationships between plants in the same pot. Nitrogen-fixing plants such as peas would make leafy vegetables such as lettuce and spinach happy, but they’d have lousy results with root vegetables such as potatoes because the nitrogen they’d add to the soil would make the potato plants all green and lush – at the expense of the potatoes trying to form in the ground.
