When the Holy Spirit reveals the truths found in Scripture to your mind, what might have been Greek to you before suddenly makes sense. It’s like a light turns on and the Bible becomes a living and powerful Word in your life. You might read something you’ve read many times before, and suddenly it sinks deeper, makes more sense, says just what you need it to say. This is when the Spirit is speaking to you, showing you the things of God. In these moments, He is testifying to you about Jesus (see John 15:26).

You might have heard about Jesus from a friend, a pastor, a parent or a stranger, but unless the Spirit speaks to you at the same time, you will reject the words of man because without the Spirit you can’t know the Son. “If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him” (Romans 8:9). That means that if you have accepted Jesus, if you trust that His death on the cross was enough to restore your relationship with God, then you have heard from the Holy Spirit Himself. He has revealed truth to you and given you access to the Father. With true revelation, with the deposit of the Spirit into your life, your mind is enlightened and able to see the things of God. That’s because the Spirit is the one who links you to the thoughts of God. He is the presence of God, the voice of God, the power of God in your life.

And “When He comes, He will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment” (John 16:8). See, His coming into your life is always accompanied with conviction. That’s because as He reveals the things of God to you, your own sinfulness becomes glaring, evident, obvious in its rejection of God’s very nature. You cannot come face-to-face with God and not see your own sinfulness. The more you see His beauty, His love, His grace, the more you see your mess, your failure, your selfishness. And

that’s the role of the Holy Spirit; to help you see not only your sinfulness, but your need to be saved from yourself.

If you look at the life of Christ, at God in the pages of Scripture and think “I believe, I believe,” but you don’t feel the weight of sin in your life, then the Holy Spirit hasn’t revealed God to you. With the presence of the Holy Spirit comes conviction, that guilty feeling that leads you not to depression and isolation, but to a deep desire to confess and to repent, to get the sin out and the life of Christ in. That’s why for centuries people have prayed something called “the sinner’s prayer.” This prayer involves the act of calling yourself what you are, a sinner, of confessing your failure to be perfect, and of thanking God for revealing truth to you through His Holy Spirit. Without the Spirit’s promptings, you wouldn’t have felt conviction in the first place.
