6.6.5 The design of global manufacturing networks using Big Data

The configuration of processes and resources in a network are subject in most cases of design decisions. Currently, the design and decisions are performed at the manufacturing site level, which may render decision inefficient since it is impossible in this case to take into consideration dependencies in the network. In the case of manufacturing network design, Big Data is among the main aspects that enables overall system design, the increasing validity of decisions, and high performance. In [25], an approach for applying Big Data techniques and analytics to assist the design of such networks is proposed. Several tasks are performed and some considered during the design phase include: the implementation of new products and resources, the introduction/removal of resource capacity at a site, the implementation of new manufacturing technologies, and so on. The source for the proposed approach is the production master data and the primary demand. The Big Data system that supports the decision processes requires the specification of different architecture layers. Big Data is produced based on scenarios. The creation of a scenario is conducted by modifying a subset of data representing the configuration of the manufacturing network. After the creation of such scenarios, they are analyzed, stored, and compared by the planner as a logical entity of data. The aforementioned tasks are performed at the analysis layer by an application server.
