Chapter Eight

I RECEIVED THE direct message on social media right when we arrived at the classy hotel that Friday evening.

I was wheeling in my small luggage bag through the shiny doors when my phone buzzed against my leg. I paused and pulled it out. I saw the notification but didn’t recognize the sender. Since I had been waiting to hear back from clients about commissions, I decided to open it.

The message contained another photo. The moment I saw it, I cringed. It was a photo of Lily with another girl. They were in a crowded club, and the girl was clinging to her. Lily had a big smile on her face, the kind of smile I thought was only reserved for me. The girl had long dark hair that fell down her back and wore a skirt so short I could nearly see her underwear. Normally, women’s clothing choices didn’t bother me, but to see someone dressed like that leaning all over my woman—

I stopped myself. No. She wasn’t “my” anything. We weren’t a couple yet, and this photo was likely old. But why were people sending me these? This was the second time. Why were they targeting me? Were they jealous of my relationship with Lily? I stared at the photo longer than I probably should have. I didn’t like to see her looking at anyone like that but me. I inspected the length of Lily’s hair. Again, I could tell it was recent because her hair was red. Before that, she had been dyeing it blonde.

I split up from the group for a moment. They didn’t notice. Rick and Julia were talking intently to one another. I sat down on a bench and slid my luggage next to me. My fingers were trembling. I struggled to even pull up my text conversation with Lily.

Lily: Did you make it to the hotel okay?

I felt a little sick. What if the photo was recent—like really recent? What if it had been taken a few days ago? What if Lily was seeing other people, and had pretended she wasn’t? What if she had lied to me?

Me: Yep, we made it here okay. We’re just checking in.

Before she could start typing, I sent a screenshot of the message I had received with the photo included in the frame.

Me: Someone sent me another one.

Lily: What the hell? What is going on? Why are people sending you these?

Me: To torture me, obviously.

Lily: Oh baby, no. You feel tortured by this? Please, don’t. Those photos aren’t recent. I promise you.

It was hard to believe her words over text, but my breath caught in my throat when I read the word “baby.” My best friend called me “babe” all the time, but it didn’t send a thrill through me like it did with Lily.

Me: Who are all these women?

Lily: It doesn’t matter. They’re not important to me. You are.

I didn’t reply. I just stared at my screen blankly. Was I being played right now?

Lily: Please reply, Jess.
