Rajasuya
When Kauravasâ hatred against the Pandavas increased, the good people like grand father Bhishma resolved to divide the kingdom and send the Pandavas away. Accordingly the Pandavas were given half the kingdom with Khandavaprastha as its capital.
One day when the Pandavas sat in the court, Narada, the divine sage, visited them. He was a visitor of all the fourteen lokas.* While giving an account of his visits, he said: "Dharmaraja! your father Pandu is in Pithrloka. He has asked me to tell you to perform Rajasuya Yaga. You are rich and strong enough to do it. You have brothers who are the greatest warriors in the world, and you have the blessings of Lord Sri Krishna. If you perform it, your father would reach heaven and remain there permanently. Why donât you help your father to reach heaven?"
After consulting his brothers, Dharmaraja decided to perform Rajasuya Yaga. He invited Sri Krishna to his capital and placed his desire before him.
"Your desire to perform Rajasuya is laudable, but you cannot perform the yaga unless Jarasandha is killed. He has decided to perform a yaga which is against all shastras* and he is going to sacrifice 22,800 kings whom he defeated in battle and taken prisoners. They are kings and princes of various principalities in this country. Now he has to be killed if dharma is to be protected. The task is not easy. Even the mightiest among the mighty, my elder brother Balarama, could not achieve this. Still we have to kill him. You send Bhima and Arjuna with me. We would kill him and then we will perform Rajasuya."
Though Dharmaraja had great faith in Sri Krishna, he was worried when he heard about the valour and wickedness of Jarasandha. He was scared to send his brothers to fight with Jarasandha. He almost decided to drop the idea of performing Rajasuya.
"Dear Sri Krishna, it is true that great ancestors like Harischandra had performed Rajasuya. But it was likely that heroes of the calibre of Jarasandha did not exist at that time. You could not face him. You abandoned Mathura and got a new capital built in the middle of the sea. Can you achieve the feat with the help of just Bhima and Arjuna?" said Dharmaraja doubtfully.
"A kshatriya should have the courage to say that he could achieve even the impossible. One who does not make an effort, cannot achieve anything. If you have the resolve to achieve the most difficult thing coupled with sincere effort to reach the goal, Sri Hari* will always be on your side. People desire to have the best, but very few make the effort to achieve it. We are blessed by Sri Hari. This is an opportunity to put forth our best towards achieving that seemingly impossible feat. When Lord Sri Krishna himself is on our side, why have you any doubt about our success in this venture? Why this fear?" said Bhimasena, supporting Sri Krishnaâs words.
Sri Krishna went to Magadha along with Bhima and Arjuna.
