Increased Intensity

As discussed in previous chapters, another major issue involves the intensity of the intervention. A multitier intervention presupposes that each intervention is more intensive than the previous tier; thus, Tier 2 must be more intensive than Tier 1, and Tier 3 must be more intensive than Tier 2. Only through such increasing intensity can teachers hold a realistic hope for the success of the remediation effort.

In our earlier scenario, in her letter to the parents, Ms. Goodwin outlined a variety of indicators that stress intensity of the intervention. First, she described exactly what types of mathematics activities the intervention involves. Furthermore, since this intervention should be more intensive than the general instruction offered to the whole class, Ms. Goodwin stated explicitly that this would be supplemental instruction and that participating students will not be removed from their other math instruction. Next, Ms. Goodwin noted the intensity of the instruction explicitly by stating how many students would participate and stipulating exactly how many minutes per day, how many days per week, and how many weeks the intervention would require.

Should TJ progress all the way through the intervention tiers without success, it is possible that this Tier 2 intervention will become a significant piece of information for a later eligibility determination. Thus, documenting the intensity of the Tier 2 intervention before and during that intervention is critical.

Accordingly, the level of performance monitoring should also be noted, and again, it should reflect a more intensive performance monitoring than other students receive. So Ms. Goodwin indicated exactly how she would monitor progress for TJ in this Tier 2 intervention. While math performance is monitored for all students using student grades every grading period, TJ and the other students receiving this Tier 2 intervention would be additionally assessed each week, resulting in more intensive performance monitoring. In summary, to document an intensive Tier 2 intervention, each of these indicators of intensity must be described.
