Summary

Moving away from the sort-and-select practice brings educators toward standards-based grading. Standards-based grading clarifies learning targets and ensures that process criteria (most often behavior expectations, not academics) are separate and explicit. Standards-based grading also requires a different approach to averaging, which can cause student motivation to suffer and prevent teachers from seeing a student’s achievement trends. A different approach to homework is necessary here as well. Take an altered approach—limiting time, alternating days or singular subjects per day, personalizing assignments, or conveying formative feedback—if forgoing homework altogether is not an option. Grading homework misapplies summative grades instead of providing formative assessment. Tying homework to student needs and providing feedback via homework increase achievement instead of stifling motivation because of insurmountable odds.
