CHAPTER 10

ADVOCATING FOR ACADEMIC ADVISING BY LEADING

Chrissy L. Davis Jones

Leadership is a process by which leaders and followers elevate one another to higher-level morality and motivation.

—James MacGregor Burns (1978)

As the landscape of higher education evolves, so do the definitions of leaders and leadership. Today, master advisors are seen as thought leaders on the front lines of the quest for student success. Master advisors know that self-awareness and acceptance of their leadership potential are the first stepping-stones in their journey to becoming influential campus leaders. When they articulate a leadership vision generated through scholarly inquiry, master advisors identify actionable goals for professional development that becomes the framework for their emerging leadership roles. Master advisors build influence that allows them to speak to be heard, and they remain cognizant of factors that motivate them to engage in effective leadership practices.
